The initiative evolved from product rejection from multiple orders of Weaving Lives. It’s a story of a woman artisan’s willingness to extend her house verandah to use it as a craft center for all. This isn’t only a space for craft making but becomes a women’s space for the village.
Craft center is a simple extension of a verandah where women artisans work together. The construction process was a very interesting one. The construction materials were primarily contributed by the artisans themselves, such as bamboo, cement etc. The local authority contributed old bricks for the foundation. Few local seniors contributed to the roof materials. Artisans were engaged throughout the construction process. Only one mason was hired to learn techniques of construction. A youth group meticulously learnt construction techniques from them. And slowly they took over in making the details. Through this process, the group got trained as the first women’s mason group in the village.
A few innovative construction techniques were used in the center. A beautiful coconut tree was accommodated in the structure. Low-height walls around the plinth help the artisans to sit with ease while working in the center.
